Character.ai breaks internet
It’s not the therapist GenZ really needs...Talking with chatbots isn't just a fad, it's a new social norm.
If you're north of 30, you might be out of the loop on this exploding trend: young people are obsessed with talking to AI chatbots. So, there’s this chatbot platform worth $1B called Character.ai. Unlike ChatGPT, each of its bots has a unique personality—one mimics Elon Musk, another plays therapist, and our favorite creates alternative timelines. And it’s become one of the most popular consumer apps in the world.
The terrible echo of 1968. America’s wound has never healed
“It may seem like we’ve been here before, but what if we never actually left?”
In 1967, the year before America “shattered”, Joan Didion famously opened “Slouching Towards Bethlehem” with a placid description of the national mood. “It was not a country in open revolution. It was not a country under enemy siege,” she wrote. “It was the United States of America in the year 1967, and the market was steady and the GNP high, and a great many articulate people seemed to have a sense of high social purpose, and it might have been a year of brave hopes and national promise, but it was not, and more and more people had the uneasy apprehension that it was not.”
OK, boomer: You’re hoarding your nest egg, but your kids need financial help now
So you've got a solid sum saved for retirement, but you also have adult children who may be facing financial challenges. Do you hold on to your nest egg, knowing your heirs will inherit the money eventually, or do you gift at least some of it to them more immediately?
The ‘evergreen economy’: Harnessing the power of healthy longevity
I like to use the word “opportunity” because normally an aging society is seen as a bad thing—it’s like, “Oh God, we’ve got an aging society.” But it’s definitely an opportunity. And I think there are two ways of spinning that. One, you often hear people say, “Well, there’s an opportunity in all the things older people need.” But I think actually there’s a more profound change in play. I call it the evergreen society or the evergreen economy. We’re living longer, but we need to be healthier longer. We need to be engaged for longer. And what are the things you can do for me to help me do that.
Startup says it can measure aging — and identify treatments that turn back the clock
Like a tree's growth rings, humans have markers of aging, and leaders of a San Francisco startup with UC Berkeley roots say clues can be found in the human equivalents of leaves, bark and seeds. Generation Lab said its "longevity platform," using a simple blood draw kit shipped to the home, eliminates biological noise. It measures aging speed across the body to offer a personalized report on inflammation, metabolism, fibrosis and other markers as well as potential interventions. It is selling its subscriptions online, including follow-up tests that can judge which treatments work, for nearly $1,800 a year or through partner longevity clinics.
