Dolly and Cher Make 77 Look Lovely

Understanding what motivates and inspires Boomers and Gen X since 2022

“There are six myths about old age: 1. That it’s a disease, a disaster. 2. That we are mindless. 3. That we are sexless. 4. That we are useless. 5. That we are powerless. 6. That we are all alike.”

– Maggie Kuhn

Dolly Parton and Cher are both making 77 years old look lovely

They certainly aren’t your average septuagenarians. Parton is riding high with a new rock album and her recent halftime performance at a football game dressed in the iconic Dallas Cowboys cheerleader outfit. The same day Parton was on the football field, Cher performed her new Christmas single “DJ Play a Christmas Song” at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The song was number one this week on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart. If 77 is the new 47, look forward to getting there – especially since so many 70-something celebs are working, living and loving with the energy of much younger people.

7 signs you're aging well, according to geriatricians

Doctors reveal what they look for when examining a patient's longevity and how you can adopt the behaviors for yourself. When it comes to getting older, there are many factors that help you live a fulfilled, healthy life — ones that go beyond working out and eating your vegetables (although that’s part of it, too). “Aging well, in my opinion, consists of three different components,” said Dr. Parul Goyal, a geriatrician at Vanderbilt Health in Nashville. These categories are physical health, emotional connection and mental support, Goyal said.

These elements come together to help you live a life that’s rewarding, lively and healthful. Doctors say there are lots of behaviors that contribute to your physical, emotional and mental health as you grow older, and some clear signs that you’re taking care of yourself in these ways. Geriatricians share the indicators that someone is aging well, along with a little advice if you feel like you’re not hitting the mark.

A boomer grandma advises on how to set boundaries with millennial kids when it comes to babysitting

Marjorie Hershberg found herself bonding with another grandma who, like her, was waiting at the school gates to pick up her grandchild. The stranger said she'd been "roped into" the job by the boy's millennial parents. The couple, who worked full time, had recruited her to watch him daily. "She was unhappy with the arrangement but didn't know how to tell them," Hershberg, a life coach, told Business Insider. The women's situations were remarkably similar — both grandmas felt that their adult kids were taking advantage of them when they had their own lives to live. They also felt guilty for thinking that way. The message: DON’T COMMIT.

Million dollar fortunes lost: The high-stakes legal battle of the Doelgers

When Peter Doelger signed the papers for JPMorgan Chase to manage his fortune, he had created a company spanning the entire United States, sold it to a conglomerate, and bet the profits on stocks and oil, beating the markets. At the age of 78, he claimed to be worth at least $50 million. However, things took a dramatic turn when signs of dementia started to show. Over the next half-decade, the Doelgers saw a near-total disappearance of their wealth, relying increasingly on JPMorgan’s advice to manage their portfolio, only to see it diminish to $1.5 million before they sold their condo in Boston and moved in with relatives.

Boomer badge of honor

It is a badge of honor to be labeled a “Boomer” although the accurate term is “Baby Boomer.” But “boomer” is fine, particularly because those who use it as a derogatory term are, as usual for their generation, clueless about what the term boomer means outside their own SocMed world. Being a boomer gives me a perspective that you can never achieve. Ever. If you were born in 1980 or after, you have no idea what I have seen in real time.We lived through—and many were a part of both—the US invasion of Vietnam and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Americans my age were drafted to fight in Vietnam and others who previously smuggled hashish from Afghanistan were paid well to smuggle arms back into the US-supported Afghan mujahideen.
