“I too am trying to age gracefully. I walk around with my pinky finger extended. Of course that’s mostly due to arthritis.”

Own a home? Lonely? Find a Boommate

Today, about half of renters are “cost-burdened,” which is a fancy way of saying the rent is too damned high (more than a quarter of them spend more than half their income on housing). And baby boomers aren’t selling their big, comfortable houses like they used to, which is driving up housing prices and exacerbating a housing shortage. There’s also a “loneliness epidemic” as our increasingly isolated and online lifestyles leave many of us (of all ages) feeling depressed and alone on a regular basis. Put together, the struggle for connection and an affordable place to live can pose a formidable challenge for people on both ends of the age spectrum. There’s an unexpected solution to both problems, however: Boommates.

This year marks the 99th birthday of actress June Lockhart. A look at the credits of her and her daughter Anne is a full nostalgia-rich ride through the history of the medium. Both actresses started off playing bright, approachably pretty young women before transitioning into maternal and older roles. Both found themselves perfectly suited to the small screen. And along the way, between starring roles and cameos, they cut a broad swath across series television.

Weightlifting at retirement age keeps legs strong years later

Lifting heavy weights three times a week around the age of retirement could dramatically preserve your leg strength long into the later stages of life, research suggests. People naturally lose muscle function as they get older, and experts say faltering leg strength is a strong predictor of death in elderly people. Previous smaller studies have suggested that resistance training, which can involve weights, body weight or resistance bands, might help prevent this happening. Now researchers led by the University of Copenhagen have found that 12 months of heavy resistance training around retirement age preserves vital leg strength years later.
