Uniquely Understanding Boomers and Gen X

Inside the brains of ‘Super-Agers’

When it comes to aging, we tend to assume that cognition gets worse as we get older. Our thoughts may slow down or become confused, or we may start to forget things, like the name of our high school English teacher or what we meant to buy at the grocery store.

But that’s not the case for everyone. Learn what separates the super-agers from the rest of us.

Get with Generation Alpha slang: 10 terms that will help you show more RIZZ!

A new generation has emerged: Generation Alpha. While the official age range for these youngsters is still heavily up for debate (some maintain the generation began in 2012 and runs through 2024, while others argue that it starts in 2010 with the release of the iPad), their shared love of screen time has helped them earn the memorable sobriquet Generation Glass.

Although the oldest among them are just now hitting their early teens, these kids today are already making a big impact on pop culture, especially thanks to their rather, um, interesting language choices. While certain terms come from streaming platforms like YouTube and Twitch, a lot of them actually originate from queer culture and African American Vernacular English (AAVE), an English-speaking dialect spoken by Black Americans. For writer Maxine Hong Kingston, age is just time going by

The writer Maxine Hong Kingston explains, in her own words, what continues to motivate her.

“In a way, I don’t believe in old age. I hear people say, ‘this hurts’ or ‘that hurts,’ and they attribute that pain to old age. It’s not age. Age is just time going by, and that’s very mysterious.

I don’t think about vanity much. I look in the mirror, and if I think, ‘I look young,’ that’s good enough. Instead of wearing lipstick or rouge, I darken my eyebrows. I can express all kinds of things just with my eyebrows. I do think about retiring, but stories and ideas keep coming. As Phyllis Hoge, a poet and my best friend, used to say, ‘We won’t die until we’ve finished our work.’"

Here’s how much boomers earn in every state in the U.S. compared to the median household income in that state. Hint: Hawaii leads the list.

U.S. Senate candidate repeatedly criticizes young people

Wisconsin U.S. Senate candidate Eric Hovde (R) has repeatedly accused young people of poor work ethic, drug use and crime, recordings from Hovde’s former speaking engagements show. In one talk, he labeled college students who protested as “so stupid” and said students cannot respectfully debate on college campuses anymore. In another he said: “There’s something going on with our younger people not entering into the labor force, but they have in the past. I fear part of it could be the big chronic drug problem that our country has had with opiates. I think part of it is kids haven’t been taught the same work ethic that the Baby Boom generation has.” Lively conversation ensues.
