Rebellious, Irascible and Horny. We’re Off The Rails
Understanding what motivates and inspires Boomers and Gen X since 2022
“The secret of staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly, and lie about your age.”

Rebellious, irascible, horny. Older people are reassuringly off the rails these days
Who says our autumn years should be benign and mellow, rather than full of piss and vinegar? I suspect we want older people to be staid or predictable, because that makes them a more manageable population. Sadly, a lot of the older people I know are astonishingly blunt, hilarious, irascible, rebellious and horny. Dignity resides in having all of our energy and personality seen and valued. Older adults are revealing the little moments that modern technology erased for younger generations
The newer generations will never know the feeling of slamming a phone down when someone annoyed you on a call, then slamming it two or three more times for good measure.
Here’s an example: "Never knowing who was calling until you picked up the phone. Back in the '60s and '70s, there weren't even answering machines, so if you didn't pick up, you'd have no idea who called. On the other side of that coin, if you called somebody and they didn't answer, you'd know it wasn't because they didn't want to talk to you, it was because they weren't available.” And a bunch more.
Women work! Trends for the 50+ workforce
It might seem intuitive that the participation rate for the older workers is declining the fastest. But exactly the opposite is true. The pattern is clear: The older the cohort, the greater the growth in labor force participation. The 65-69 cohort overtook the 70-74 cohort recently, largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But the comparative growth in the 50+ cohorts by gender is rather amazing. The Labor Force Participation Rate for women age 75 and over has risen 87% since the turn of the century. The rate for men age 75 and over is up less than half the women's rate around 36%. Is it really surprising? What woman wants to hang around the house all day with her retired husband?
